Worms, Flies & Lice

Australian sheep suffer from three main groups of parasites: worms, flies and lice. These parasites are also the three most economically important sheep health problems nationally.

Three major information web sites have been developed to assist sheep producers to limit the effects of these parasites. The Sheep CRC and its partner organizations have developed FlyBoss.

WormBoss and LiceBoss were developed by Australian Wool Innovation and the Sheep CRC will be developing a new WormBoss website in the near future. The following pages have links to related web sites plus other information on these parasites.

To visit these websites click on the headings below or choose from the tabs at the bottom of the page to find more detailed information.

Flystrike control

Flystrike is a major risk and disease for Australian sheep, costing $280 million annually in treatment costs and lost production associated with flystrike.

FlyBoss was created by the Sheep CRC to provide the latest information to reduce the risk of both breech and body strike through management and breeding approaches, as well as information on treatment of flystrike outbreaks.

Worm control

Controlling worms is the number one animal health issue for most sheep producers in Australia, cost ing more than $350 million annually in deaths, lost production, prevention and treatment costs. With this in mind it is important that producers can easily find all the information they need in one place. That source is WormBoss.

Lice control

LiceBoss is a decision support system which can help woolgrowers control lice more effectively, minimise pesticide residues and reduce the cost of lice control. Lice cost Australian woolgrowers more than $120 million annually. They reduce fleece weight and downgrade wool quality.

ParaBoss

ParaBoss is designed as an integrated national program providing best practice advice for managing sheep parasites in different environments in Australia.  It is the umbrella for the three flagship programs:

  • WormBoss
  • FlyBoss
  • LiceBoss

Producer Training

Flystrike Management Workshops

The Sheep CRC, AWI, MLA, Sheep Genetics and the State Departments of Primary Industry (I & I NSW, DAFWA, DEEDI Qld, TIAR (Tas), Rural Solutions SA and DPI Vic) have jointly developed the one stop shop for Flystrike Management. Flystrike and Lice Management workshops will be held at locaions around Australia and will provide information for sheep producers on an integrated approach to managing breech strike and body strike. Participants will learn how to pick the sheep flies love; which chemicals work for flies and lice; and how to prepare your management and breeding plan to prevent flies and lice.

WormBoss Worm Control Workshops

The WormBoss workshop is a small-group, activity-based workshop for sheep producers across Australia, to improve their ability to effectively control sheep worms. The focus is on practices a sheep producer can do to control worms on their property, with the minimum of academic theory. The workshop is tailored to cover all aspects of worm control relevant to the region in which it is delivered. This typically includes: The effects of worms; Preparing low worm-risk paddocks; Breeding for worm resistance; Worm testing; When to drench and Managing drench resistance.
